Bento Cakes: A Whole Cake, Sized for One

Bento Cakes: A Whole Cake, Sized for One
A bento cake is a Korean-style format that's become popular across Asia in the last few years: a small round cake, usually 4 to 5 inches across, packed into a box shaped like a bento lunchbox rather than a cake box. The idea is that it's a real cake — sponge, filling, decoration — just scaled down to a single portion, so you don't need an occasion or a crowd to justify ordering one. We currently make four: Earl Grey Minicake (260g), Mango Minicake (270g), Salted Caramel & Coffee Minicake (275g) and Tiramisu Minicake (220g). Earl Grey and Tiramisu are the two people tend to describe as not too sweet, Mango is the lighter, fruit-forward option, and Salted Caramel & Coffee is the one that reads closest to a dessert-shop treat rather than a snack. Because the format is small, we can decorate the top of each one individually — a message written in chocolate or a simple design piped on — which is part of why bento cakes have become a popular small gift in Hanoi: for a coworker's birthday, a thank-you, or just something a bit nicer than a regular slice of cake. They're sold ready-made at our shops, so unlike our birthday cakes there's no need to pre-order one — though for a custom message on top, it's worth checking with the shop first.
